Scottie Scheffler Speaks on Wild PGA Championship Experience
Adam Cairns-USA TODAY Sports

The 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla is one that Scottie Scheffler will never forget. The most dominant golfer in the world currently didn’t win the tournament, which would have been his third major victory and first outside of The Masters at Augusta. Instead, it will be remembered for a wild misunderstanding before Round 2.

On Friday morning, Scottie Scheffler was arrested outside of the Valhalla Golf Club after a fatal car accident occurred earlier in the morning. Just trying to get to the course to begin preparing for his second round, he was involved in a misunderstanding that resulted in him being arrested and brought to the station.

It was an unprecedented occurrence, as he made it back in time to play his second round. He responded as only he could, firing off a 5-under 66 to keep himself in contention for the tournament.

That was one of the best rounds he had ever recorded in a major, putting aside all the noise and focusing on what he loves to do. Unfortunately, his worst round in nearly a year occurred on Saturday.

Scottie Scheffler shot a 2-over 73, which essentially took him out of the running for the victory. He responded well on Sunday with a 6-under 65. That is his lowest score in the final round of a major in his career, which helped him land inside the top 10 for the eighth time in his last 13 major starts.

After finishing up on Sunday, the world No. 1 golfer spoke about his memorable round. He admitted that it was a hectic experience that left him quite tired. Not only was Friday morning life-changing, he and his wife had their first child less than two weeks ago.

“Overall, right now, how I’m feeling, I’m fairly tired, definitely a lot more tired than I have been finishing some other tournaments,” Scheffler said. “But I’m proud of today how we went out there and fought. I got off to kind of a slow start and I was able to kind of get some momentum and post a good round.

“Yesterday [Saturday], obviously, was quite frustrating and a bit of a different day, but overall proud of how I fought this week. Was fortunate to be out here competing, doing what I love.”

Scottie Scheffler was planning to return home to Dallas where his wife Meredith and newborn son Bennett are waiting. Getting some rest would be nice, but with a newborn in the house, that will be tough to come by for Scheffler even at home.
