Kansas City Chiefs Urged to Add Mauler to Protect Patrick Mahomes
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

As the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft looms, the Kansas City Chiefs have the opportunity to fortify the offensive line in front of Patrick Mahomes, after dropping one of this class’s elite burners into the MVP quarterback’s arsenal in Round 1.

Now that general manager Brett Veach and the Chiefs added Xavier Worthy to significantly upgrade the receiving corps, it could be time to add quality depth in the trenches in the second round.

According to Pro Football Focus’ Josh Liskiewitz, Notre Dame offensive tackle Blake Fisher is an ideal fit for the Chiefs on Friday night.

Fisher is a two-year starter at right tackle. He wins with power as both a run-blocker and a pass-blocker. He has a wide, strong base that allows him to generate a ton of power through his lower half, making for an impactful punch at contact.

One of the premier prospects still on the board, it would make sense for the Kansas City Chiefs to target Fisher both to upgrade depth as the franchise’s swing-tackle, with the upside of competing for the starting left tackle role immediately.

Blake Fisher NFL Draft Scouting Report

Fisher was a stalwart in South Bend and has significant upside at the next level.

“In pass protection,” the Bleacher Report Scouting Department writes. “Fisher is fluid and quick out of his stance into his signature 45-degree set while mixing in vertical and flat, aggressive sets depending on the concept and alignment.

“He works independent hands to evade and disrupt the rusher’s plan, has the length and strength to keep them at his fingertips, and has the redirect ability to stay attached and cut off inside counters. However, he’s sometimes late resetting his hands once his initial approach goes awry, which causes his feet to get stuck, the corner to shorten and him to lose cleanly at the top of the drop.”

Given the dominant pass-rushers that reside in the AFC West; Maxx Crosby in Las Vegas, and Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack in Los Angeles, it would make a lot of sense for Veach and the Chiefs to make a solid investment along the offensive line with an early-round pick.
